Personal Development and Wellbeing

At Sacred Heart RC Primary School, wellbeing and emotional health permeates everything we do. It is interwoven into our teaching and underpins our ethos that drives our school and ensures children grow into resilient citizens with a healthy mind and body. Whilst protecting our pupils is paramount, we ensure that our children understand modern society and the dangers they can encounter in their everyday lives, such as internet safety, climate change and social media. Pupils at Sacred Heart have an enriched, balanced and varied experience in school, that allows those with different skill sets to be acknowledged and praised. All children are given a chance to shine, whether their strengths are academic or in other areas of development.

Although children are taught about the importance of mental health, we have an understanding of how young our children are and look to all stakeholders to ensure our support is age appropriate and specific to individual needs. We encourage an open door policy in which talking is encouraged but in which other methods of communicating are available in order that no children are left without an outlet.

Sacred Heart RC Primary School is an ATTACHMENT & TRAUMA AWARE SCHOOL

At Sacred Heart, we are committed to supporting the emotional health and wellbeing of our pupils, their families and staff.

We know everyone experiences life challenges that can make us vulnerable at times and anyone may need additional emotional support. We take the view that positive mental health is everybody's business and that we all have a role to play.

An understanding of the impact of trauma and attachment on the developing brain of the child enables school to recognise behaviours as communication and develop approaches that address the underlying needs of the child.

Understanding attachment theory, so the school can become a secure base where there are strong adult child relationships, enhances learning outcomes and wellbeing for all children as well as supporting those that have unmet needs or have experienced trauma and neglect.
