Modern Foreign Language -Statement of Intent

At Sacred Heart RC Primary and Nursery School the learning of a modern language is deemed essential in order to provide our pupils with a curriculum which will adequately prepare them for secondary education and in the world of work. We also recognise the broader benefit that learning a language can have on pupils; such as a greater depth of understanding of their native language, improvements in grammatical knowledge, improved memory and recall, alongside promoting tolerance and appreciation of different cultures and people.

Aims of Modern Foreign Language at Sacred Heart.

Modern Languages lessons at Sacred Heart RC Primary and Nursery School are linked to the government’s own guidance for MFL provision. Each lesson provides opportunities for students to develop in a number of key areas which are highlighted below. Lesson planning shows how each activity links to outcomes so all class practitioners can clearly see the aims and objectives of the session.

Key learning goals

  • Listen attentively to spoken language and show understanding by joining in and responding
  • Explore the patterns and sounds of language through songs and rhymes and link the spelling, sound and meaning of words
  • Engage in conversations; ask and answer questions; express opinions and respond to those of others; seek clarification and help
  • Speak in sentences, using familiar vocabulary, phrases and basic language structures
  • Develop accurate pronunciation and intonation so that others understand when they are reading aloud or using familiar words and phrases
  • Present ideas and information orally to a range of audiences
  • Read carefully and show understanding of words, phrases and simple writing
  • Appreciate stories, songs, poems and rhymes in the language
  • Broaden their vocabulary and develop their ability to understand new words that are introduced into familiar written material, including through using a dictionary
  • Write phrases from memory, and adapt these to create new sentences, to express ideas clearly
  • Describe people, places, things and actions orally and in writing
  • Understand basic grammar appropriate to the language being studied, including (where relevant): feminine, masculine and neuter forms and the conjugation of high-frequency verbs; key features and patterns of the language; how to apply these, for instance, to build sentences; and how these differ from or are similar to English

Assessment

At Sacred Heart RC Primary School there is a clear pathway for progression from year 3 to year 6.  Students are given a level in the four key skills of listening, reading, writing and speaking.  From this, a best fit level to assess progress of each student can be awarded.

At Sacred Heart RC Primary and Nursery School we recognise that pupils will progress at different rates and therefore there is a wide scope of expectation in terms of outcomes at each stage. It is expected however that most academic pupils would be working within the GCSE pass level 4-9 by the end of four years provision.  Equally, the vast majority of pupils should be working at or above level 3.
