Welcome to Year 1!
Welcome to Year 1! In our class we are all one big happy family. We want all members of our family to feel safe and to be respected.
Our family consists of 27 children, Mrs Collinson, Mrs Ashworth and myself, Mr Whitaker.
I am new to the Sacred Heart family but have been warmly welcomed and am enjoying my journey with a lovely group of children and a fantastic staff.
If you ever need to talk about your child or have any concerns please feel free to speak to me at the end of the day, or by appointment.
Phonics Screening Check
In the Summer Term, all children in year 1 are required to take the Phonics Screening Check. This is completed during the normal school day and is usually done by the class teacher. Phonics screening is a list of 40 real words and pseudo (Alien) words, which your child needs to be able to read independently. The check usually takes about 10-15 mins, although there is no specific time limit.
Here are some links which you may find useful.
This is the government site with some of the tests from previous years which you can use to help your child become familiar with the check.
Here is another useful link to Phonics Play which has some free to access games and can provide full access for about £12 for one year's subscription.
If you want further information regarding the Phonic Screening Check, then please don't hesitate to speak with the class teacher.
Summer Term - Swimming
Every Tuesday we will be going for swimming lessons in Year 1. Please make sure that you send your child's swimming trunks/costumes and a towel with them in a bag. Girls can wear swimming hats, especially if they have long hair. Please can we remind all parents that swimming goggles are not to be sent with children.
Remember to make sure that your child has a PE kit ready for every Wednesday and Thursday. If your child does not have their PE kit they will be expected to participate in PE by writing down notes throughout the lesson.
Girls need to take off jewellery before PE as it is for their safety! We are not allowed to remove earrings so please make sure this is done at home. This also helps to prevent jewellery from going missing!
